THE SULTAN OF KEDAH

Tuanku Al-Haj Abdul Halim was born in Alor Setar on 28 November 1927. He received his education at the Malay School in Titi Gajah and then at Sultan Abdul Hamid College. Later in 1949, he furthered his studies in the United Kingdom. In the same year, he was installed as the Raja Muda (Crown Prince). Upon completing preparatory studies, he enrolled at Wadham College for a course in Social Science and Public Administration. Wadham College was also the place where his father Sultan Badlishah studied.

Upon returning to Malaysia in 1955, Tuanku Alhaj Abdul Halim joined the District Office of Alor Setar and later the State Treasury.

Tuanku Alhaj Abdul Halim married Tuanku Bahiyah binti Almarhum Tuanku Abdul Rahman in March 1956.

In 1957, Tuanku Alhaj Abdul Halim was appointed as the Regent of Kedah. He ascended the throne of Kedah in the following year when his father passed away. He was officially installed as the 27th Sultan of Kedah on 20 February 1959. In 1970, he was installed as the fifth Yang di-Pertuan Agong. He ruled until the end of his term in 1975.

As the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, he was the Commander-in-Chief of the Malaysian Armed Forces. He was appointed as Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal Malay Regiment in 1975. He was also the Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal Malaysian Reconnaissance Corps before he was installed as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Tuanku Alhaj Abdul Halim received various honours and awards from within the country as well as abroad among which are the First Class Order of Sacred Treasury from Emperor Hirohito of Japan (1970), the First Class Order of Bintang Maha Putera from Indonesia (1970), the Ramata Order (Thailand, 1973), the Hon. Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath (U.K., 1974) and the Asso. Knight Order St. John (1974).

Tuanku Alhaj Abdul Halim was appointed the sixth Chancellor of Universiti Utara Malaysia. He was also the President of the Kedah Royal Club, Malaysian Oxford and Cambridge Association, Kedah Golf Association, Kedah JP Association, Sports and Welfare Council of the Malaysian Government, Alor Setar, Sungai Petani and Kulim Rotary Clubs, Malaysia and Singapore Vintage and Classic Car Register, National Snooker and Billiard Association, Darul Aman Golf and Country Club and Homeopathy Doctors Association.

Tuanku Alhaj Abdul Halim loves golf, reading, music and photography. He is a strong supporter of sports particularly football and golf. He also has a collection of exotic birds at his palace.
